If you’re a Parkinson’s person checking your calendar, its easy to feel like you’re a goalie poised to catch the next symptom flying between the goal posts.

As time goes by, Parkinson’s disease irrepressibly consumes space for fun in a person’s calendar. While we are making appointments for common symptoms such as tremor, stiffness, slowness, and falls, Parkinson’s disease is delivering a variety of new motor and non-motor expressions, individualized for each of us.

Arms don’t swing as freely when walking, facial expression is difficult, posture becomes a little stooped, handwriting gets smaller, speech becomes soft or trails off. Freezing when walking or changing direction, swallowing, constipation, depression, low blood pressure, and sleep issues may occur. Ailments rarely listed as Parkinson’s symptoms may pop up like itchy scalp, vision changes, or cough attacks when dining with co-workers.

In the midst of our chaos, we yearn for the days when fun invitations, not medical appointments were the norm on the calendar.

I’d rather be lounging on a beach in Greece or savoring the rich culture of Italy. Instead, I have Parkinson’s disease, sciatica in my leg, and osteoporosis. With mobility in question, the thrill of exotic travel looks like a long shot right now.

To avoid traveling down a dark and dismal road, I’ve been working on a calendar of hope that inspires me to face challenges and feel positive about my future.

I’ve named my calendar “Plan One for PD.” It is my beacon light for healthy living. Every morning I look at my schedule to decide if I’m mobile enough to go to the exercise class on the calendar. Sometimes I can’t make it, but at least I have a direction.

Plan One for PD is an alternative to lying around and feeling crummy. It is a nudge for an active life in spite of PD. If you decide to create your own plan, I hope that you’ll enjoy the gathering process as much as I have. Best foot forward, and happy moving!

  1. Hi Darcy, Im glad you mentioned itchy scalp as well as the usual, and the problems of dining out with family and friends. Because exercise is causing so much inflammation at present I am concentrating on mobility and how much I can put into it. Even sorting the full length pantry today involved plenty os sfretching and twisting. Tomorrow I plan to walk to visit a friend. I agree a calender is a good idea. Every day I set a goal to achieve. must set a week ahead on the calender. x
