January 8, 2015 | by Darcy Blake | Through the special kindness of the National Parkinson Foundation, I had recently had the opportunity to meet the people at Circuit Therapeutics, a lab that is touted as an industry leader in optogenetics research, and is funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation. I blogged about the visit in Circuit Therapeutics Brings an “O” to Optogenetics.
During the tour, I was honored to be part of a video in the making. The video titled Medicine’s Next Best Thing? Optogenetics: Lighting Up the Brain! [click this link to watch it]—just released—offers an impressive introduction to the new-age neuroscience called optogenetics.
In the future, optogenetics might offer a treatment more exacting than Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), without the burden of equipment implantation. It may also be more selective than our current modes of treatment for Parkinson’s Disease. Thanks to Circuit Therapeutics for working at the forefront of scientific discovery and presenting this hopeful introduction to the Parkinson’s community.
